Art Elements Design Challenge and Blog Hop - Stars

Stars - the topic for the new design challenge at Art Elements. That couldn't be too difficult, could it?
I like stars. Often I have stood outside in the backyard at my sister's place, waiting for my cab and staring into the sky. Seeing them is a bit like looking out over the sea for me. It's this feeling of being completely overwhelmed when I'm trying to grasp infinity and fail every time, but also a feeling of deep admiration and humility.

I like the idea of sparkling stars like those in the tiara shown in Laney's challenge post. I like Grimm's fairy tale of the star-money. I like stars on a Christmas tree or in jewelry.
And I made stars before, crocheted from wire, with clay faces, grumpy, sleeping, even shouting, with beads, with pearls or crystals, with a stone or a clay heart, I bead loomed pendants with stars, often reduced to mere dots in a night sky.
So I wanted to do something different this time, maybe wire weave one or finally try one of those 3D peyote stars.

The things you want, eh?
When I found a baggie of little faceted gemstones in my stash that I had almost forgotten about, all the plans went out the window. I've made a few tiny stars to put on top of tiny Christmas trees for example, so how about some small stars with faceted stones? There were three round stones in the baggie, an amethyst, a citrine and a green quartz which gave me the idea to use different colors for the stars as well, raw copper, a light gold and silver.
Then I put them together as a prototype and wasn't so sure about the colors anymore. Or of the way I put them together. I thought I'd wait and see if it grew on me or if I would maybe like all of them better in fine silver instead (update: this month didn't go like planned, so I'm still not sure about them, still haven't done them in fine silver, didn't put a chain on, but I'll keep you updated if/when that changes - I'm really leaning towards putting them in a row at the moment, but still haven't decided on colors or fine silver).

Here you go. Help me out, what would you do?

It is easier if they are bigger, but where's the challenge then? :-D

  2. They would make great pendants, Christmas tree decoration, wall decor and what not - so versatile and beautiful. A choker with all three of them?

  4. I think that they would make beautiful pendants with looped beads, maybe even strung on a saree ribbon

  5. Oh my! I love these. Crocheting with wire has to be the most aggravating thing I have ever tried. So you amaze me with these. I like the idea of putting them together but I think they are so beautiful that they are stand alone pendants. They need to shine all by themselves. Either as a necklace or even special ornaments.

Wire crochet is how I started out, so I've had quite the practice with it. Pieces that small can be a little difficult.
      Thank you for your input!

  6. I love you stars. I think they would make gorgeous ornaments as well as pendant on a necklace. I admire your wire crocheting skills.

Seems as if pendants are the #1 suggestion at the moment.

  7. They are beautiful and look so difficult to do! I think it would be easier to give an opinion in person, but I think I would be inclined to patina then highlight the high spots so that it takes back some of the shininess and also shows off the intricacy better. But even if you left them as is and hung them on a chain, they are beautiful!

I could patina the copper, but the other two have coated wire. I'll definitely keep it in mind for a future attempt, though!

  8. They're really sweet, I'd love to see them as a necklace with dangles on the points.

I have a pair of huge stars (no stones) with a lampwork bead dangle myself. I like dangles ;-)

As long as I have a number of stitches I can divide by five for a five point star, I'm fine :-D

  10. Oh those are really cool, I can't wire weave at all, you are so talented! I think I'd make them tree ornaments, if you do that, and if not, hang them in a window so you can see them all the time! The gemstones would sparkle!

These are a little small for ornaments, but maybe I can use bigger faceted stones to make some, maybe rivolis.

  11. They are intense! Because the idea of wire weaving hurts my mind. LOL. I want to see them in a row- since you said that its all I can imaging. They are very cool looking - And as i have a small tree I DO see them as great ornaments! Thanks for joining us!

  12. These 3 stars are beautiful, Cat!! I love the chainmaille technique that you used. No idea for chain or hanging. Not sure how large they are, nor the middle section, but while waiting to decide how to hang, use a small tea light candle in middle?

It's crocheted wire, chainmaille is a technique I have never even tried.
Each star is a little under 1 inch :-D

  13. I love these! I would totally hang them on my wall in my studio so I could look at them and be happy :) That is a lot of detail work you put into them...

    1. Thank you! They might get lost on a wall as they are only an inch each, but since more people thought they would make nice ornaments, I should make some eventually! :-)

  14. Love! These are just fabulous! I love wire crochet but it's a bit hard on the hands... :) I think these stars would each shine on their own, and like some of the other comments, feel they might work well as pendants.

I got used to it over time. It is a little hard on crochet hooks, however. I think I'm about to lose another one on it ;-)
      Thank you for your feedback!

  15. Your crochet stars are so magical. I think I would turn them into ornaments, but the kind you leave out year-round because they're too pretty to put away.

  16. I really love your stars I would do them in silver exactly as you have and then hang them on a simple chain and you would have he most perfect christmas necklace!!!! Such a lovely design.

    1. Thank you, Niky! I'll see if maybe the other stones will work for that, after all there are still a few days until Chrismas :-)
