Tell Us About ... Sunshine

I have been asked if I'd like to participate in the Global Writing Challenge on the second Thursday of the month.
My posts will go live a little early (to avoid collision with the silent films), so if the posts of the others are not live yet, please check back later.
The current membership consists of Deb’s WorldSuzy TurnerWithin a World of My OwnOnce Upon a Time Happily Ever After, Marsha in the Middle, Coffee and Cocktails at the Casa, and me. It's fun to learn how differently everyone interprets a topic.
You can play along and link up with us!
If that's too short notice for you, maybe next time? The prompt for July will be "Dance".

This month's prompt is "Sunshine". Ouch.
I'd like to start by describing a cartoon by one of my favorite cartoonists, Graham Annable aka Grickle. My favorite are his vampire cartoons.
I don't share artists' work without permission, but you can find the cartoon here.

You see a vampire sitting on his couch holding a portable game console. Behind him there's a strange looking armor, his wolf is sleeping on the rug, a side table holds a skull lamp. Everything is grey, the only colors are those of the console and of the warm light shining from it - and the caption reads "The only reason he played Animal Crossing was to walk through the sunshine again."

Awww
๐Ÿ˜
But, uhm, yeah, I'm not that vampire. I'm the kind of vampire who doesn't flee the sunshine by necessity, but out of conviction.
I was the "shadow child" under the tree at the local pool while my friend impersonated a sausage on the grill because she loves the sun.
I'm the one who lets the shades down when
 others pull them up.
Drag me into the sun and I might be hissing at you - or possibly dissolving in a cloud of dust like Hammer's Dracula.
If you have been around for a while, you already know that I'm very much drawn to the moon instead of the sun even if I won't find me flying in front of a full moon.

What you may not know, however, is that I don't have anything against the sun as such, not that I had ever given that a real thought before.
There's no question about our needing the sun. Our planet needs the sun for light, warmth, gravitation, vitamin D - in short, for life, and a lot of different cultures already knew that a long time ago, only they credited solar deities and built solar cults around their beliefs.

We all know the stories about ancient people panicking during a solar eclipse. I experienced one full solar eclipse myself, and although it was raining and we didn't get to see anything, the darkness and the silence gave me an idea of how much scarier that must have felt to people who didn't understand what was happening there, not knowing if the sunlight would return.

When I was a kid, my yellow pencil was always the shortest. I absolutely loved drawing a big sun into the corner of every classic "landscape with house" picture. Not a full sun, just one like this here - yes, this is practically a copy of the picture I remember drawing at my friend's house once at the tender age of 8 or 9.
Okay, not really, I only had felt-tips available, but no light blue for the sky and no brown for a tree, and filling out the grass wouldn't have worked for the flowers, so I had to make some small changes. Can't say my drawing abilities have much improved since then as I'm usually not a fan of tiny houses. Maybe it's a fairy house. You get the idea, that's what counts.
As you can see my suns always had a wide smile and the alternating short and long rays.

Suns (and sunflowers which don't have their name for nothing) didn't just turn up in my drawings, though, they also made their way into my jewelry creations.

So I guess you could say I appreciate the sun as a life giver and inspiration and love the concept of sunshine as long as I don't have to be in it directly myself (and for that I even have my medication as a valid excuse).

I think that's a pretty good compromise ๐ŸŒž

Now let's see what the others have to tell us (Debbie is still travelling).

Suzy

writes about her changing relationship with sunshine and why she appreciates it far more now than she ever did before.

Sally

shares sunshine-inspired outfits and handmade jewelry.

Leslie

packed a little El Paso sunshine in her pocket for their trip to the UK.

Even though her students begged her not to sing, Marsha loves music.  This time around, she’s writing about songs she loves that mention sunshine!

Amy
writes about her first year of freedom to chase the sunshine in all four seasons.

And now you. Tell us about "Sunshine" and link up with us!

    1. Thank you, Linda, but my painting talent? You are pulling my leg, my friend! ๐Ÿ˜„

    2. If you only knew how badly I draw or paint, you would know that I am dead serious!!! LOL! I hope you have a great weekend ahead, dear friend.

    3. I think we always say that of ourselves ๐Ÿ’—
A great weekend to you too, Linda!

  2. It's too bad I already have my post written and ready to be scheduled because I should totally have written about the complete solar eclipse last year (at least, I think it was last year)! And, yes, I drew suns just like that though my houses weren't near as cute as yours. I think they were just like what I lived in...white with grey shutters and shingles. I really don't even remember what color the front door was. Your jewelry continues to astound me, my friend! I'm so glad you've joined us!

    1. You can always write about it in a different context! So I gather you were luckier than me and had no rain?
I think I drew houses I wanted to live in, just not that tiny ... and it probably makes sense that I always added a tree for sitting under.
Thanks again for inviting me, Marsha!

  3. Greetings from a fellow vampire/night owl/caveman who appreciates the importance of the sun but does not particularly like to be out in it! I'm enjoying that your seed bead wrap bracelet has a sun motif that is very much like the sun that you draw!

    1. Waving back from my coffin, Sally!
Yes, I can't help, it's a design that's very dear to my heart (even if I couldn't fit in nostrils in the bracelet suns because it's a slim one!).

  4. Lovely post - why do you think as kids we always put the sun in the corner like that? I'm wondering if that's because that was how we saw it captured in photos? (I tried to find full sun in photos for my post and I couldn't - cos of the green dot, I always have to cut it out). Very cheery prompt!

    1. Thank you for stopping by, Lydia!
I have no idea why we do that. I'm quite sure that I must have been inspired by pictures my older siblings did and thought that's just how it has to be? Maybe somewhere there are cave paintings hidden aways showing exact the same sun!

  5. Nice post! That's funny about the corner-sun: we all do it! I like the sun but not when my allergies accompany it.

Allergies suck. I'm sorry you have to deal with them.

  6. What a lovely collection of sunny pieces of jewelry. Especially like the sunflower necklace and the sun ring beside it. I am into rings lately. Noticing them more than I ever have before. I was a sunworshipper with baby oil as a teenager. Oh, the damage that worshipping has done!! Now days, I still enjoy being in the sun, being outdoors but not until I am slathered with sunscreen.
Thank you for joining the Global Challenge group. I look forward to getting to know you and enjoyed reading this response to June's prompt.

    1. Thank you, Leslie! Isn't that a cute bead in the ring? The big sunflower is wire crochet with seed beads.
Yes, sunscreen really makes sense, more than ever!
Thank you for the welcome. I'm looking forward to learning more about all of you, too!

  7. Oh how I love your post, Cat!! You sound just like my best pal, who hisses at the sight of sunlight LOL! I was like that, but I'm getting a bit more accustomed to the sun these days. However, when I'm indoors, I really don't like too much brightness—especially if it's hot, so I'm also the one pulling the curtains / shades / shutters down!!
So happy you've joined the group!
    Big hugs
    Suzy xx

  8. Cool that you are now a member of this group! And of course, I knew the direction your post would take on this topic. :D I miss the sun if it stays hidden for too long. That said, I can’t be out in it too long without being slathered in sunscreen, or I will burn. I’ve not seen a full eclipse, but even partial eclipses are kind of creepy. It must have been terrifying before humans understood. I also love the moon.

Your sunny jewelry pieces are amazing! And of course my favorite is the pair of earrings I have. :D

    1. Of course you knew! After all you've had to suffer my whining for a long time ๐Ÿ˜„
I never had a sunburn in all of my life.
Thank you! I'm glad you still like them!!

  9. Like you I appreciate the sun for what it offers us, but I don't like it when it's causing sweltering heat. I much prefer Fall and Winter.
