10 on the 10th - What I really like or love

"Show us photos of things you really like or love."
That sounds like an easy enough prompt for this month's 10 on the 10th, but as I wrote in my comment to Marsha's preview post, it really seems impossible to choose just ten from my thousands of cat pictures, especially because so far there have been 12 cats I've had the honor to serve.
Not kidding, at this point I didn't even know if I was going to get to ten this time, not because there are not enough things (which I will be interpreting loosely as cats and other animals are not things, neither are people, but you know I don't show people on my blog, anyway), but because I probably don't have pictures of them all.
Also this is difficult because we already did the "Diamonds in your life" post in April and I'm bound to repeat myself. Sorry about that. I'll try to choose different pictures at least.
As usual, the order is quite random (except for the cats, they rightfully insisted to be at the top) and I could keep going if I had the pictures for it (for example movies and music are missing for lack of good pictures) or if I had thought of the other things first.

1. Cats.
I love them. I'm obsessed with them. They are beautiful and elegant (most of the time), they can be very goofy and sweet, and they can be very effective predators. Big and small. Also they have been with me through good times and hard times.
The names are in the order they came into my life.

2. Animals.
I didn't have any pets of my own as a kid, but I always had animals in my life - dogs at my friends' houses, cats, cows, and bunnies at the farm of my godmother's parents.
Then the ex and I had not only our little zoo at home once we moved in together, but also the little zoo in my hometown where we volunteered. How many people can say they have been "combed" by a coati (there was no one around to take a picture, sorry)?
This is just a very, very small selection of animals from home and the real zoo.

3. Books.
You already know this picture, but I think it expresses it best.

4. My collections.
I have already told you how I feel about my collections, but at least I can show you some different pictures.
My main collections are Steiff animals and vintage Barbies.

5. Flowers.
I'm no gardener and like to tell anyone that I have ten black thumbs. That doesn't mean I don't like flowers or plants, though.
I have taken these pictures in our little garden and on trips, in Botanic Gardens and zoos.

6. Beads and wire and cabs and everything else you can create with!
That probably doesn't come as a surprise. There is so much you can make and do with tiny bits of glass or roving, stone or metal.
Here's a little selection.

7. Museums and libraries.
Can't say I always approve of the method of acquisition, but I could never resist a nice museum.
Unfortunately, I don't have many pictures without someone standing in front of a museum or library.
These are the best I have (a mix of Cardiff, Cambridge, Edinburgh, London, and Weil am Rhein).

8. Cemeteries.
They have something peaceful. I like the smaller ones, with trees and with benches where you can sit and dream and feel the stories of the people around you.
My town has two cemeteries that we call the old and the new one (the new one opened up in 1903). The old one is around our oldest building, the Oberhofenkirche (built from 1436 - 1490).

9. Vintage.
Vintage this and that. Toys, furniture, decorations, books, paintings, calendars, clothes, fabric, tools, needles, dishes, glasses ... I could go on and on. Unfortunately I have neither the space nor the money for everything I love, but I may have one or the other item around.

10. Chocolate.
I can't help it. I don't have the habit of photographing chocolate, though. So this one picture from a birthday a few years back will have to suffice. These are so-called "Göppingerle", named after our town and made in our oldest café (macaroon with a vanilla souffle in fine chocolate, available in different flavors).

Nostalgia - Vintage cat photos

When was the last time you have felt really, really old? I don't mean feeling old after a hard workday or after climbing a steep hill or if you are groaning every time you get out of bed. I mean ancient.
Let me tell you about that one time I ordered takeout food. Most of my delivery guys were really nice. At the time I ordered quite regularly or waited for my order at the place itself, and sometimes we got into a conversation.

And then there was this one guy. He was friendly, everything was fine ... until he saw the two photos on the dresser in my hallway. These photos ...

... and said "Such nice pictures! Are you one of those girls?"

I had thought the highlight of my life had been when an English speaking student at work had called me Ma'am, but this was way better. So I replied with a smile "Erm, no, those are vintage pictures, from way before I was born."
I could tell he was not convinced, he just said "Oh, okay."
Believe it or not, I never saw him again. Had I scared him off?? Maybe my smile wasn't as friendly as I had thought? :-P

Where we got these pictures, I can't remember. The ex picked them because they went so nicely with our vintage dresser, and of course the cat reminded us a lot of our Dude.

I thought of getting one of the photos or postcards or whatever they are out to see if there maybe was a photographer's stamp, printer's info or a date, but one of them has a paper glued to the back which is cardboard and after pulling out two of the small nails on the other one, I still couldn't remove the picture, so I thought I'd better leave it alone.

The interesting part is that there's a wooden strip on each picture that is painted black with engraved words which have been gilded. It is slid in between the frame and the glass.
One says "Gute Kameraden" = "Good mates", the other one "Spielgefährten" = "Playmates".
I have tried to find out more and see if there are others like these, but didn't have any luck so far.

If you google vintage photos, you will find others like these with girls and cats, often white Persian cats. In the old times Persian cats looked more like Angora cats (we always thought that Dude was at least part Angora) and didn't have flat faces yet that some breeders try to get away from again because they cause so many health problems. They have always been popular, even Queen Victoria loved them.
Excuse me, I think I'm getting dragged down the hole of historical cat facts and vintage pictures now ....

Interview with the artist - Heidi from Fur and Feathers Art

Today I want to introduce you to Heidi. Her shop name Fur and Feathers Art caught my attention right away, how could it not?
Let's jump right in now.
Tell us a little about who you are and where you come from.

Hello, I am Heidi Kunkel. I am an animal and bird artist. I am originally from Alaska and grew up in Wyoming before moving to Oregon in the early 90s.  I am the youngest of 5 kids.  1st half of my childhood, we grew up in a big A Frame style house my dad had designed. Great memories of playing in the street, shooting hoops in the driveway, tons of friends, school yard, ice skating, roller skating, etc.
Our family (and cat) would travel often in our Winnie (Winnebago). We traveled all around Alaska. All from glaciers to clam digging. We even traveled to the lower 48 visiting family as well. Wyoming was nice too. Grew up in a motel my folks owned. Lived in Jackson Hole. Overall, I am blessed with my upbringing. My parents have been married for 50 years! How many can say that?
In my spare time I volunteer at our local cultural center. I help teach drawing and painting to kids of all ages.

What's your craft/art and how did you get to do it in the first place?
I am a pencil artist. I use anything from black graphite to color pencils. I describe my work as black and white lifelike illustration with dashes of color.  I pretty much began drawing when I was very little. My dad would let us use the back of his architect paper. My first drawings were of sea life, and mostly Alaskan animals. Pretty much looking at encyclopedias.  In Junior High I was really into horses and anything about them. I seriously considered a career, even riding them.  I drew plenty horses with jockeys. By the time I was teenager, MTV was big and I saw the band Heart and one of their videos. BAM. Bye horses, enter rock music. I saw beauty in the Wilson Sisters and drew Heart all the time. I began to discover other music and drew other artists (mostly woman singers, guitarists). I used to draw bands and send the art to them. I made it into a few fanzines back then as well. As I did more portrait work I did try and sell some watercolor postcards of mine. Since we lived in a mountain range, the Tetons would sell more than music drawings.  When I was in high school I always took art and painting classes and to be honest, us students had a fantastic art teacher. Craig Fleuter. I found out recently, he had passed away. I was very sad. He was always encouraging. I always remember. “ Don’t be afraid of the paint!” When I was a senior, submitted some of my portrait work for a scholarship. Learned to make slides of my work. I got the first art scholarship offered from our local Lion’s Club. At that time I was also working part time in an Art Gallery for an artist, Penni Anne Cross. Really behind the scenes of handling valuable prints, packaging, shipping them. Good Times! The people I worked for were wonderful. I eventually became their babysitter. lol
I didn’t want to attend college right away, but my friend (RIP this year) at the time was going to visit a college in the state that was supposed to have a really good art program. I wanted to study Graphic Design and do something in the music business. I only spent one semester at the college, came home and took night courses in Fine Art. Found my calling in Fine Art. I learned so much. I have a bit of a background in figure study and watercolor painting. Strange, people see illustration in my art now. Since I switched to animals and birds, people ask me more for portraits. lol

I think this is one of the most asked questions – where does your inspiration come from?

Hmm. Now? Music and Nature. All kinds of music lifts me up. I listen to music sometimes when I draw. You go into a flow. I’ve said “ pencil in right hand on paper, with left fist pumping in the air.” That is me.
Nature is all around us. I take it all in. The birds singing, the wind blowing through the trees. Shadows of trees on the ground make great patterns. Cloud formations.  Looking out my back window.
Beauty in the not so beautiful things, tiny things. Spirituality.  I like to take in a few different religions. They keep me grounded and at peace. What can I say? I am a daydreamer.

What is the story behind your shop name? In your case I am also curious if you have animals of your own?

I was trying to think of something more creative and recognizable. I draw animals and I draw birds. Furry friends. Feathered Friends. I grew up with cats, but back in the late 90s our last cat, Rocky had diabetes and was sick for a long time. We made the decision to have him put to sleep. He was such a sweet kitty. He was an orange tabby.  He was like a leech, but a snuggle bunny. My mom decided no more pets. With Rocky it was difficult. Honestly, my dad and I would not mind a pet. I miss all our kitties. I do have surrogate pets. I sometimes house sit for my older brother and his wife. They have 4 dogs and a cat! Auntie Heidi is here!!

Tell us a fun thing about yourself.

I am a fun gal. I have a great sense of humor. Take the bad, make a joke. I am always making my friends and family laugh. I am a huge horror movie fan. Love to travel. I’ve been to Europe twice. People don’t first see Rock/Metal Girl. I have a tattoo on my upper right arm. Says Rocker on the top and below, a cat paw. When I was younger, considered being a rock singer. I still have old rock posters on my bedroom wall. Is that enough fun to say about myself? I am good at imitations too.  oh. I like to have conversations with animals. I imitate bird sounds and calls. I try and thank my feathered pals for their time.

Do you do other creative things, if yes, what?
I love photography. Love capturing nature’s beauty and all surroundings. I love to paint in acrylics. Right now I am enjoying clay. I am starting on making little decorative birdhouses.  I use to write poetry and lyrics.
Which one of your pieces is your absolute favorite? Which one was the hardest to make and why?

Oh My! Not sure!  If I HAD to pick one. My Male Anna’s Hummingbird sitting at a feeder. I took the actual photo and drew it. It was a super quick shot. He came so fast and I did sort of a back hand shot with the camera. It makes me smile... Hardest? Let’s say, the hardest was never finished. I painted this HUGE (almost as big as myself and I am almost 5 ft) canvas of  Stevie Nicks. She is sitting on a grand piano with a tambourine in her hand. I gave up and I was almost done too.

Is there someone whom you admire and who inspires you?

I admire Rembrandt, Bruce Lee, Photographer Edward S. Curti.
My dad inspires me. He is an artist himself. He has designed homes for many many years. He still does everything by hand in this computer age. He has held onto his early art. He was a fine illustrator and painter. He(and mom) have always supported me and find new avenues for me and my art. Children inspire me. The ones I help teach. You can have the most awful day and they can make you smile. I see myself in some as they talk about life, their art. They can draw or paint the most simple piece and have a huge back story to it. LOL I have had a few come up to me after class and hugged me. It melts my heart.

Even though she is a different kind of artist. Singer Doro Pesch. I have loved her style and songs for years. She puts 100% into her music, her voice, her look. She loves her fans. She is like this tiny woman with a huge voice and when you hear her speak it is so soft and her accent is rich. I am of German descent (Alsace-Lorraine although there are also Austrian and Slovenian roots) and learned a little German from her songs. I met her in ’08. I cried.  She was unbelievably sweet!

I have been blessed to have met and known people throughout my life. I am surprised sometimes how and why I have met some. Some famous, some not. When it comes to inspiring, my friend Cherie has been wonderful. I met her through a rock magazine sending for her band’s demo. Her and I struck up a great sisterly friendship. Her husband is great as well. They have a band. HGMC HarleygirlMotorcycleClubband. Check them out! I can say there was a period I wasn’t drawing much and she was the one that told me to. “Do it.” She was one of my first commissions. They gave me opportunities with early band logos. I was a band secretary.

If you had free choice of just one supply you can use for your craft/art, what would you be dreaming of, no matter how expensive?

Hmm. Does an art studio count? (Absolutely! I know a lot of creative people who would love to have one!)

Do you sell online, if yes, where can we find you?

Yes, I do.
I can also be found on Fine Art America.
I have a photography site at Bird Photography by Heidi Kunkel.
My Facebook page is here.
Last but not least I am on Art Wanted.

Famous last words ;-) Is there anything else you want to tell the world out there now?

I want to thank Cat for offering this interview. It came at a great time and put a smile on my face.  I enjoy her work as well. Thank you! The same week I was asked to become part of our local Tuesday Market to be “Artist of the Week.” Art is looking UP.

I love customer orders. If anyone has any questions regarding that, or my art in particular, don’t hesitate to contact me.

We all get in “ruts” but never give up. Never stop learning. NEVER follow a trend. I have had people say I should do this, do that. NO I have worked hard to create my style. Why would I change? People now know my style of art and why they like it. DO it for YOU. I admit I am not great at accepting criticism, but don’t take it hard.  Volunteer! Network! You’ll never know what you can learn from other artists. Ask for advice.

Last. I found this quote: It is so true.  “Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.” Scott Adams.
Thank you, Heidi, for this interesting interview! I hope people will take the time to browse through your beautiful work!

Relaxed Sunday and cat sleeping gas

Actually I had a quite relaxed Saturday as well. Going shopping and disposing of cans early, some light blogging, plurking, emailing later. Sounds like a weird kind of fitness training. Then I fell asleep in my chair in the afternoon and visited Morpheus, my old pal, for quite a while. In the evening I woke up all cranky and tired and foggy in the brain.
I know who or what is to blame for that.
Cat sleeping gas. You won't find it on Wikipedia, you won't find it on a list of dangerous substances, but it's there. At first I had thought it was a matter of touch and sound. A cat snuggled into your arm and purring makes you go to sleep pretty fast, doesn't it? After years of thorough research, though, with the help of my trusted furry assistants (even if they think I am the assistant or even less than that) without who my work would not have been possible, I found out that it's a gas. It enters your body and you won't know it. I am sure it finds its way not only through the nose, but through all skin pores and that way controls your body and your brain.
It works best if you are already in a horizontal position or at least half horizontal. That way you won't have to move to fall asleep. You won't fall if you are standing. You think that is nice? I think it was designed that way to keep the furry masters' slaves from hurting themselves. After all they need us. Well, they need our opposable thumbs. Still. Who knows for how long.
So why do I think it's a gas? Because it also works when there are cats sleeping in the same room. The more, the faster you are gone.

A master of this cruel game is Greebo, the innocent-looking one. He swears by all methods, the purring, the snuggling, the shedding hairs - ah, sorry, that one is wrong in here - the licking and the gas. He was the one that got me yesterday. I was just sitting in my armchair, crochet hook in hand, wanting to pick up my wire and there he was, snuggling into my armpit, smiling at me innocently and then working his spells. I think it took about 10 seconds for me to drop like a fly.

Now he is here in my lap, relaxed as can be. Sorry, his head is cut off a bit in the second pic, but my arms were not long enough to catch all of him like that and holding the camera above my head I also couldn't check the display.
Oh-oh, I feel a tiredness coming on .....................

How exciting is that??

I didn't think the week could get any better, but hey - never stop hoping, right?
After weeks of wondering where the white balance was hidden in my camera (good thing when you lose the description), I finally had the idea to look it up in the interwebz. I had suspected it to be hiding somewhere behind the "func"-button and I had pushed that button a few times without getting further, though.
Today I had the perfect idea. I set the camera to German and found that gave me not only symbols, but even a few words. There it was "Weißabgleich", yay.
This is like reaching the last camp before getting to the peak of Mt. Everest. After all I am not a pro. I'm not even an amateur. I am somewhere between a snail and a frog regarding my photographic abilities. But I'm a determined snog (no, that is not a word, I know, but would be a nice name for a snaily frog, don't you think?) and eventually I'll come around.
*going off to prove her point*

Embarrassing

So I spent hours in my mom's garden to take pictures in natural light. I photographed till the batteries ran low - ok, they hadn't been fresh from the beginning, but still.
When at home I checked the about 150 pictures, I was ready to throw myself into the Fils, but decided not to because it is hardly deep enough to drown in there with style. I think about 10 pictures were left in the end.
Thanks to a sunny, but windy day. I didn't think it would make that much difference, but of course crochet pieces are lightweight and even if I didn't see them move, obviously they did. And I didn't even get cake!
Oh Man.
